SFYBA Update 3/15/20

SFYBA is actively monitoring the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) situation in the United States and here in Minnesota. The situation is rapidly evolving, and we are relying on the most current information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) to direct our decisions and actions. Current information on Coronavirus impact in Minnesota can be found at: https://www.health.state.mn.us/

Consistent with the school closure announcement today, the temporary suspension of spring sports activities by MSHSL, as well as similar announcements by area organizations, no organized SFYBA team activities should take place over the next two weeks (until March 30).  We will continue to monitor the situation to determine if further action will need to be taken, taking into account actions and recommendations by the CDC, MDH, MSHSL, school district, and other area organizations.

What Age Level Should I Register For?

The official age cut-off date is May 1st. For example, to play on a 12U team in 2019, the player must be 12 years or under on May 1, 2019.  However, SFYBA recommends each player play with his/her grade (if age eligible) even if their birthday falls on or after the cut-off date. For example, if you are a 6th grader and your 12th birthday is May 15th, you would be eligible to play 11U but we would recommend you play 12U because that is primarily where all 6th graders will play.

SFYBA fields a team or teams at ages 10U-14U.  We may also field a 9U team.  If not, we will evaluate 9U players for a spot on 10U teams.  8U/2nd grade players are allowed to register and try-out, but note that SFYBA does not field an 8U travelling team.  8U players will be evaluated for spots on a 9U or 10U team.

If a player plays at 9U or 10U as a 2nd or 3rd grader (plays up), SFYBA wants them to return to their grade level team the following year, meaning they will play two years at an age level.
